How Oxygen Is Used in Glassblowing

How Oxygen Is Used in Glassblowing

If you are wondering how oxygen is used in glassblowing, the answer is simple. Oxygen is needed for ratification, which is the process in which gases are converted to liquids. The conversion of oxygen into gases is also necessary because oxygen is a very strong oxidizing agent, which makes the glass less smooth, which in turn, decreases its potential to prevent shattering. However, oxygen also has some positive features, such as it is the most abundant element found on the Earth’s surface (estimated at 5.5 percent).

In the process of gasification, two substances are formed: carbon dioxide and water. Carbon dioxide is a very reactive element that can split when it comes in contact with water (remember carbon dioxide is a gaseous substance). The gas created is then collected by a collection container. Now, we know how oxygen is used in glassblowing; this is why carbon dioxide is mixed with water in a vessel to make the bubbles in the glass. The strength of the mixture depends upon how much oxygen is present.

The final step in how oxygen is used in glassblowing , after the conversion of the carbon dioxide to glass, comes the cooling phase. This is where the gas bubbles break. The frequency and size of the broken bubbles determine how clear the glass is. In some cases, more than one shot is required to achieve a good clear glass. The reason is because the temperature of the glass can be reduced by adding more cold air into the mixture.
